Bio:

Jonathan Hadley is a musician and producer whose work explores atmosphere, texture, and emotionally direct songwriting. He is the founder of Abrasive Monologues, an independent artist collective and label, and releases music both under his own name and through collaborative projects within the roster.

Jon Hadley writes music like memories… out of order, half-lit, and sharper than it should be. As the founder of Abrasive Monologues, he builds sonic and narrative spaces where friction is never a flaw… it’s the point. His work moves between music, philosophy, and narrative realism, often circling themes of cost, love, and structural truth. When he’s not writing, he’s architecting systems that let other artists do the same… louder, cleaner, and with more control than the industry ever wanted to give them.

About this track

All my life I lived in the shadow of my father… Not because anyone wanted me to live up to his standard, but because they didn't. He wasn't a great man. He was troubled after the murder of his mother as teenager, and three tours in vietnam. He didn't know how to fix the broken pieces of himself. Hindsight being 2020, it is also very possible he suffered from several forms of mental illness, which are now showing up in his children. He died when I was 5, but was gone long before that, and I never had the chance to get to know him. There are parts of this song that I mean, and there are parts of this song that through the years, I've learned that I don't mean. As I've gotten older, and suffered from my own mental health issues, I've come to understand him better, and I'm less angry about those things now than I was then. No matter my level of understanding, his family only partly accepts us, because we're his children… The sins of the father I guess. He was a true black sheep, which I guess makes us gray. Color is a chronology, and each song is representative of how I felt at a given time in my life, not necessarily representative of how I feel now.

Lyrics

I got
Good at
Giving In
And being the bad guy

I got
Good at
Bleeding
With no wounds at all

I got
Good at
Seeing
The gray between

I got
Good at
Pushing
You away from me

And now it's too late
Wouldn't matter anyway
We weren't what you wanted
We were just in your way

Hey is it cold in your grave

When you died you left your
Gray Sheep on the horizon
When you died you left your
Gray Sheep on the horizon

I got
Good at
Being
Compared to you

I got
Good at
Lying
About it not being true

I got
Good at
Seeing
Myself as broken

I got
Good at
Being
Broken

And now it's too late
Doesn't matter anyway
The damage was done
When she saw your face

Hey is it cold in your grave

I was born just a Gray Sheep
On the horizon

The horizon

I was born just a Gray Sheep
On the horizon

The horizon
