Song Obsession: Not Right Now

If I haven’t made it perfectly clear, I have a tendency to get obsessed with songs. Sometimes that means listening to a track 25 times in a row. Other times it just keeps pulling me back again and again. This one is a bit of both for me, and judging by the reactions from everyone I’ve shared it with, it’s hit the same way for a lot of people.

For the last six months I’ve been completely hooked on “Not Right Now” by Doc Gryphon. I’ve shared a ton of music with friends, family, and even random strangers over the years. Not every song lands with everyone, but this one seems to resonate deeply with most everyone I play it for.

A quick look at the lyrics may help explain why it connects so strongly:

Lyrics: Sunlight splattered over dust across a dirty floor. I’d get up but really what’s the fuckin’ hurry for? Thoughts are scattered, nothing matters like it did before. I’m not paralyzed, I just can’t decide. I just can’t decide. I just can’t decide.

Maybe it’ll be alright. We’ll move from darkness to light. Maybe I’ll sleep through the night, but not now. Not right now.

Maybe there is a plan. We can know happiness then. Maybe the sun will shine in, but not now. Not right now. Not right now.

Have you ever felt forgotten, watched but never seen? And every prophet selling nostrum is part of the machine. Perceptions drifting, focus shifting, automatic stride. Empty sidewalks, falling raindrops, memories left behind. Memories left behind. Memories left behind.

Maybe it’ll be alright. We’ll move from darkness to light. Maybe I’ll sleep through the night, but not now. Not right now.

Maybe there is a plan. We can know happiness then. Maybe the sun will shine in, but not now. Not right now. Not right now.

In Doc’s own words: “This song is about struggling with life’s difficulties and despite knowing that things will eventually get better, you still feel hopeless. Sure the skies will clear and the sun will shine again, but not right now.”

It’s raw, honest, and captures that heavy in-the-moment feeling perfectly. If you haven’t heard it yet, do yourself a favor and give “Not Right Now” a listen
