I want to share one of my current song obsessions: “Friends” by Steve Wells. I’ve been playing this track on repeat, just like many of my all-time favorite indie artists—Western Jaguar, Mike Allen, Mr Woody, Empire of, and so many others.
This song stirs deep emotions and is quickly becoming my personal anthem. Written for his daughter, it explores heartbreak and the power of having people show up when you need them most. While I’m not going through heartbreak myself, its message resonates profoundly because the struggle doesn’t have to be romantic pain. We can replace heartbreak with any burden we carry.
The theme remains the same: calamity after calamity keeps coming, and life never lets up. But my friends? They keep pulling me out of that pit of despair every single time. No exaggeration. Just like the friends I’ve found in this unique indie community, this track is a lifeline of hope for me right now.
Lyrics:
I see you there with a hole for a heart
You’ve never felt more alone, more apart
And I see you there with your face on the floor
You haven’t moved since he walked out that door
I see you there, tears are falling again
You gave him everything, he gave you pain
I see you there with no words to describe
All of the hurt that you’re trying to hide
You look so sad in your red summer dress
Hands on your head and your face, it’s a mess
You’ve had a bad day, baby
Super sad day, baby
We are your friends
Another mad day, baby
You’ve been had day, baby
We are your friends
And I see you there with your suitcase of sins
Blood on your hands and the scars on your skin
I see you there under waves of despair
Drowning alone, thinking nobody cares
You look so sad in your blue winter dress
Hands on your face, you’re a mess
You’ve had a bad day, baby
Super sad day, baby
We are your friends
Another mad day, baby
You’ve been had day, baby
We are your friends
Look to the stars, they are shining for you
Look to your friends, we are here, we are true
You’re not alone, we’ve all been here before
Hearts in our hands and we’re ready for more
You’ve had a bad day, baby
Super sad day, baby
We are your friends
Another mad day, baby
You’ve been had day, baby
We are your friends
